Biography: Founder, Jeffrey Delkin
“We started with a single idea, a lot of passion and a bit of blind courage.”
That was the inspiration for Oregonians Jeff Delkin, co-founder of Bambu®, and his partner, Rachel Speth when, a decade ago, they decided to take a holistic approach in creating everyday housewares with renewable materials. The goal was set to lessen the impact placed on the earth’s natural resources. They followed the bamboo, to China.
Jeff was no stranger to Asia, having had extensive branding and strategy experience in Asia and the United States over the last 20 years shaping the strategy and communication for some of the most recognized brands including Coca Cola, Kodak, Heinz, McDonald’s, Bank of America, as well as numerous smaller brands. Yet he and Rachel (Development and Sustainability Director at Nike) quit their jobs, rolled the dice and headed abroad to call Shanghai home.
“We are an American-born brand,” Delkin said, about the company that is now headquartered in Shanghai where the team oversees development and production. “We have a unique business structure in that the principals reside at the location of production. We couldn’t do what do unless we were here - at the source.”
It’s also in Shanghai, where Jeff and Rachel Speth developed and launched Nest ‘Design with a Conscience’ retail concept expressed through intelligent design and responsible manufacturing.
Jeff oversees distribution of the bambu brand. The company opened an office in Portland, Oregon where his team handles sales and customer support. “Rachel and I are both from Portland, but that’s not the only reason it made sense for us to open our office there. Portland has a vibrant, thriving community focused on handmade goods, making Bambu a perfect fit!” explained Jeff when discussing the office in the U.S.
Jeff held regional and management positions with WPP’s Ogilvy & Mather, Publicis’ Leo Burnett, IPG’s McCann-Erickson, as well as several boutique brand communications firms. Today, Delkin also oversees sales, marketing and brand development for Bambu and its affiliates globally. Bambu is a pioneer in sustainable business recognized for design-led, brand-offering, award-winning innovative products in and out of the home.
