bambu - Our origins

Rachel and Jeff formed bambu in 2003. But the founders' connection with this material goes back even further than that. In 1998, we read with interest about the rock star groupie-turned queen of bamboo, Linda Garland in the Financial Times. Linda was an inspiration for many of us and a true pioneer. Read more about Linda Garland here.

World Bamboo Day is about paying homage to a plant that has changed the lives of millions of people who have made bamboo their business and their life.

bambu is a Partner with the World Bamboo Organization. The WBO is focused on promoting the use and opportunity of bamboo as both an economic and environmental force.

5 Interesting Facts About Bamboo

1. Thomas Edison used bamboo as a filament for the first light bulb in 1877.

2. There are nearly 1500 species of bamboo that can be found in Asia, Australia, North and South America and Sub-Saharan Africa.

3. Bamboo releases 30% more oxygen into the atmosphere and absorbs more carbon dioxide compared to other plants. Because of this fact, bamboo greatly decreases the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and cleans the air.

4. You can literally Watch the Grass Grow! Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet. It can grow 3 feet in height in 24 hours under appropriate climate conditions. Unlike other woody plants, bamboo reaches maturity after only 3 to 5 years.  (bamboo is a grass, not a tree).

5. Bamboo is not a tree. Bamboo is a grass. The hardiest of all the grasses.

There are numerous other advantages and benefits of bamboo. We call bamboo 'the poster child' of renewable materials.

It has deep cultural importance too. Bamboo is a symbol of durability, strength, resilience, and flexibility. In our business, we employee numerous craftspeople, farmers and the local economies in which we work. So we rejoice.
